Matched Betting Australia: A Practical Guide
Reviewed by WagerWise · Updated 11 July 2026
Matched betting uses two opposing bets to reduce exposure while converting a bookmaker promotion. The maths can balance the possible outcomes, but the real-world result still depends on the advertised terms, available odds, commission, stake limits and both bets being accepted at the expected price.
This page covers the Australian workflow, a complete bonus-bet calculation and the practical risks. For the beginner definition first, read what matched betting is and how it works.
How matched betting works
- Read the promotion terms, including minimum odds, eligible markets and expiry.
- Place the qualifying bet required by the promotion.
- When the bonus is credited, choose an eligible selection and record its back odds.
- Find the opposing lay price on an exchange, or a suitable back-back hedge at another bookmaker.
- Calculate the hedge using the correct bonus type and commission.
- Confirm both bets, then record the actual result and any rounding difference.
The WagerWise matched betting calculator handles the stake split. Always recheck the figures if either price changes.
Worked Australian bonus-bet example
This hypothetical example uses a $50 stake-not-returned bonus bet at back odds of 5.00, a lay price of 5.20 and 6% exchange commission. It replaces the old “make $200” claim with a calculation you can audit.
Lay stake = ($50 × (5.00 - 1)) ÷ (5.20 - 0.06) = $38.91
Lay liability = $38.91 × (5.20 - 1) = $163.42
If the back bet wins: $200.00 bonus winnings - $163.42 liability = $36.58.
If the lay bet wins: $38.91 × (1 - 0.06 commission) = $36.58.
The calculated return is the same before rounding because every listed outcome is covered. It is not a promise of earnings: odds can move, markets can be mismatched, bets can be rejected and commission can vary.
Back-lay versus back-back matched betting
Back-lay
You back a selection with the bookmaker and lay the same selection on an exchange. This is usually the most direct calculation because the lay stake can cover every listed outcome in one market.
Back-back
You back opposing outcomes at two bookmakers. This can be useful when exchange liquidity is limited, but you must confirm that the markets settle under the same rules and that every possible outcome is covered.

Use the calculator to account for back odds, lay odds, exchange commission, bonus type and qualifying loss. It shows the expected result for each outcome before you place either bet.

Is matched betting legal in Australia?
The relevant question is whether each wagering service is licensed and whether your bets comply with its terms and applicable state or territory rules. Before opening or using an account, check the ACMA register of licensed interactive wagering providers.
WagerWise compares information and provides calculation tools. It does not guarantee that a promotion is available, that a bookmaker will accept a stake or that an account will remain unrestricted.
Matched betting and Australian tax
Do not assume every betting result is automatically tax-free. The ATO considers the facts of each case, including whether betting activity is organised and businesslike. See ATO Taxation Ruling IT 2655 and obtain professional advice for your circumstances.
Risks and common mistakes
- Odds movement: one price changes before the second bet is accepted.
- Market mismatch: the two bets use different settlement rules or do not cover every outcome.
- Incorrect bonus mode: stake-returned and stake-not-returned bonuses require different maths.
- Commission errors: the exchange rate is omitted or entered incorrectly.
- Stake limits: the planned hedge cannot be placed in full.
- Human error: the wrong selection, market, price or stake is submitted.
Use your own verified details, follow operator terms and keep a record of every step. Do not use multiple identities or accounts to avoid restrictions.

Responsible gambling
Matched betting still involves wagering accounts and real money. Set limits, never chase a mistake and stop if the activity is affecting your finances or wellbeing. BetStop can exclude you from Australian licensed online and phone wagering services.
